Molding MUSedora

Janelle has always been known for chasing her dreams and helping others chase theirs. So in 2014, after graduating from Harvard’s Graduate School of Education, she set out to create an institute through which she could do just that.

The institute would have three main branches:

1) An agency that would represent artists and give them authentic agency over their art while maximizing their social impact.

2) A think tank where young people of color could receive mentorship and find a safe springboard for their future in all aspects (financial, social, and otherwise).

3) A consultancy that would challenge the business world to create more inclusive spaces for all people not just in speech but in practice.

With the vision made plain, Janelle decided to use her credit card (definitely not advised!) to start Musedora, the name being mashup of the three main aspects of Janelle’s individual work—Music, Education and Oration. As the idea grew, Janelle would be offered many opportunities, but would also encounter many obstacles. Over the course of a year, Janelle would fall into incredible debt, lose her business partner, and have deals with both the U.S department of education and Sony Music fall through in unforeseen circumstances. Finally, not knowing what else to do, Janelle turned her vision over to God. While the vision lay dormant for 5 years she reignited her faith, served her church and local community, and worked tirelessly to get out of debt (and being humbled by the sacrifices it took to accomplish that goal). Now, in 2021, debt-free (Hallelujah!) and in God’s way, rather than in her own strength, Musedora has been reborn. Though the vision has been rearranged and restructured Musedora’s original intent still stands—to provide reliable and essential support that won’t be moved by outside influence.
